Updating data sources with dataadapters

You've heard it so many times that it's almost a cliche: This is the information age.

Information is data, and managing information means working with databases.

Database programming can be, and often is, very complex.

This hour is intended to get you writing database code as quickly as possible, but if you plan on doing a lot of database programming, you'll want to consult a dedicated book (or two) on the subject.

In this lesson you'll learn the basics of working with a database using ADO. You've heard it so many times that it's almost a cliché: This is the information age.

Similarly, many stored procedures perform an action but do not return rows. For more information, see Merging Data Set Contents and Handling Data Adapter Events. The following examples demonstrate how to perform updates to modified rows by explicitly setting the Private Sub Adapter Update(By Val connection String As String) Using connection As Sql Connection = New Sql Connection( _ connection String) Dim adapter As Sql Data Adapter = New Sql Data Adapter( _ "SELECT Category ID, Category Name FROM dbo. Update Command = New Sql Command( _ "UPDATE Categories SET Category Name = @Category Name " & _ "WHERE Category ID = @Category ID", connection) adapter. The Execute Non Query method returns an integer that represents the number of rows affected by the statement or stored procedure that was executed. If multiple statements are executed, the value returned is the sum of the records affected by all of the statements executed. Next, click the View Code button on the Solution Explorer window to access the form's code, scroll down and locate the procedure Main(), and change the reference of Form1 to fcls Main. NET platform's new database technology, and it builds on ADO (Active Data Objects). NET defines Data Set and Data Table objects that are optimized for moving disconnected sets of data across intranets and Internets, including through firewalls. NET includes the traditional Connection and Command objects, as well as an object called a Data Reader that resembles a forward-only, read-only ADO recordset.
